چکیده

he U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resources (AMLR) program has developed and conducted a research plan tailored to the goals of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), part of the Antarctic Treaty System. The Convention manages antarctic fisheries to conserve targeted species while also taking into account the impact fishing activities might have on other living organisms in the antarctic ecosystem. CCAMLR’s unique management regime has come to be known as the “ecosystem approach.” In keeping with CCAMLR’s mandate, the impact of the krill (Euphausia superba) fishery upon dependent predators must be understood. The AMLR program monitors finfish and krill fisheries, projects sustainable yields where possible, and formulates management advice and options. In addition, the program conducts field research with the long-term objective of describing the functional relationships between krill, their predators, and their environment. The field program is based on two working hypotheses: • Krill predators respond to changes in the availability of their food. • The distribution of krill is affected by both physical and biological aspects of their environment. In the previous eight seasons, the AMLR field program T

Impacts of local human activities on the Antarctic environment

We review the scientific literature, especially from the past decade, on the impacts of human activities on the Antarctic environment. A range of impacts has been identified at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Chemical contamination and sewage disposal on the continent have been found to be long-lived. Contemporary sewage management practices at many coastal stations are insufficient t...

Antarctic Marine Biodiversity and Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents

The diversity of many marine benthic groups is unlike that of most other taxa. Rather than declining from the tropics to the poles, much of the benthos shows high diversity in the Southern Ocean. Moreover, many species are unique to the Antarctic region. Recent work has shown that this is also true of the communities of Antarctic deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Vent ecosystems have been documented...

Palmer Long-term Ecological Research on the Antarctic Marine Ecosystem

The Palmer Long-Term Ecological Research (Palmer LTER) program seeks to understand the structure and function of the Antarctic marine ecosystem in the context of physical forcing (atmospheric, oceanic and sea ice) on seasonal to millennial time-scales (http://www.icess. ucsb.edu/lter/lter.html). The western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) region, the location of the Palmer LTER (Figure 1), is proving...

Fisheries in the Southern Ocean: an ecosystem approach.

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) is bound by its Article II, 3 to follow an ecosystem approach to management. This approach has been extended to the application of a precautionary approach in the late 1980s. In our review, we deal primarily with the science-related aspects of CCAMLR and its development towards an ecosystem approach to the managem...

Conservation and Management Frameworks for Sub-antarctic International Waters

The waters of rhe sub-Antarctic Southern Ocean are legally distinctive from those which fall within the Antarctic Treaty area extending to 60e S, not only because the Treaty does not apply in those waters but also because sovereignty over sub-Antarctic islands is largely uncontested. As a result, many of the countries claiming sub-Antarctic possessions are able to assert the full range of marit...
